Top 5 Free Software Picks over at Cnet, plus alternative to! ~GL

Alot of time I'm critized for not talking about software... And cheap/free software. So here is a post just for that!!! While at heart, I'm a big gadget nerd, but where would we all be with out software... and our wallets would be alot happier if it was free software to boot.

Podcaster Tom Meritt (Buzz Out Loud) does a weekly top 5 video for CNET. And this week his top 5 was all about the free Software. Great picks. I use 3/5 of the stuff listed.

Also a great website to check out for cheaper or free alternatives to main stream software is the site http://alternativeto.net I use them every now and again to find solutions on the cheap. Check em out!

Neat little Cable management Desk Hack.

At the last dumpstertech podcast Randy noticed the little desk modification I made recently. I bought this $10 ikea cable management rack. It's pretty neat and really helps, plus it even can hold a power strip in it. You will need a power drill however.  I actually originally saw this on a few desks in Lifehacker's Featured Workspaces.  But Ikea actually offers several cable management solutions here.

So take a look and enjoy.

Palms goes Pixi, oh and it's still on Sprint, hey VZW, jealous? ~GL

Click the Picture for the Full Engadget Story. But tonight Palm announced the Palm Pixi! The Centro/Treo update WebOS device... It's tiny folks, smaller than an Iphone 3GS and all BlackBerries...

It should hopefully arrive on cheap end of things on Sprint. Though Sprint did officially lower the price of Pre to $150 today as well.

What's kind of enteresting is that Sprint is a launch partner on the Pixi, just like it was on the Pre, despite the Verizon Wireless CEO early stating they would have a WebOS phone in 6 months after Pre Launch... So... Guess Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse, really did know his stuff when he told the VZW CEO to check his facts.

Rock on. Follow the Links for Pics and Vids!!!

An Update... On what's going on... Sorry no podcast, just a blog post..

James, our producer and friend is getting married in less than a week. And with him moving two weeks ago we haven't had a lot of time to set up a Recording session for DumpsterTech.

James did however manage to squeeze an hour in today to see Randy and Graham as he bought his new cell phone. a Palm Treo Pro

Though this wasn't the first phone he was looking at... But after Sprint announced the $350 price tag on the Touch Pro2 with 2 yr agreement, we all kind of started looking around at for an alternative.... Come on Sprint, no phone in the US should be over $199 with a 2 yr contract....  It just won't sell.

Also yesterday Sprint announced the bastard child of HTC and Android, the HERO  is coming to their network in a chinless version!!! While everyone at DT likes the Hero for it's 5 Megapixel Camera/Camcorder and it's full support for Adobe Flash, we are all a little miffed by the lack of physical keyboard, but despite the hardware disability, the Sense UI is pretty.... Real Pretty....

Sony's announcement of a new PS3 slim was neat, but not nearly as neat as the ripple effect by it's $100 price drop to $299. Randy and Graham both think this is a great way to get rolling on a blueray collection if you are feeling the need. It's a great deal, but despite the smaller hard drive we probably buy an older 80 GB PS3, because of the easier to upgradable hard drive, 4 usb ports, and better audio options for surround sound. Oh, and Linux compatibility!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Sorry again to all our loyal fans for the lack of a Podcast. We hope to do something soon!!!

StarCraft 2 Delayed till late 2010... WTF!?!?!?

Joystiq among others are reporting that the long awaited StarCraft 2 will be delayed until the second half of 2010.

While this is a pretty giant WTF moment for all of us here at DumpsterTech, as right now, we are still playing the original StarCraft after we record our podcasts, but we think we have an explanation...

This game is most likely finished, given the amount of Battle Report footage that has come out, and all of the other game play footage that is on the net for this. It is more likely that Blizzard/Activision is  coordinating this game's release with the US military for a sneek attack on Korea, given that the day this game will is finnaly released, the entire country will be taking the day off.

What other explanantion can there be? I mean it's not like Blizzard/Activision ever delays games until oblivion.

Seriously assholes, release the fucking game.
